Ingredients

2 cups milk
1/2 cup cream
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons butter
1 medium sweet onion sliced
1 cup (4 ounces) Gruyère cheese shredded, divided
1 cup swiss cheese shredded, divided
2 pounds baking potatoes, cut into 1/8-inch-thick slices (about 6 1/2 cups)
8 ounces ham, 1/4 inch slices
¼ teaspoon gigi’s hot n sassy spice

Directions

Preheat oven to 350°.

In a saucepan melt butter and blend in flour.

Add 1/2 cup milk stir until it thickens, then add remaining milk and cream.
Salt and pepper, and hot n’ sassy to taste. Add 1/4 cup of each cheese, and stir until it is melted and set aside.

Butter casserole, peel and slice potatoes. Layer half of potatoes in large oven-proof casserole dish, then add a layer of ham, then a layer of onion, and then a layer of 1/3 of remaining cheeses. Pepper on top. Then another layer of remaining potatoes, ham, onion, and cheeses. Then pour the sauce over the entire dish.

Tent foil over the dish and bake for 40 min. Uncover and bake for additional 45 or until brown. Let it stand for 5 minutes before serving.
